Al presently serves as Camping Chair and Unit Commissioner in Pacifica District, and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 412. As a youth, Al attended the 1964 National Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. In those prehistoric times, he and his Pasco, Washington Troop, a unit of the Blue Mountain Council, traveled by train visiting Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C. before arriving at the campground on the Schuylhill River.
In 2010 at Fort A. P. Hill and again in 2013 at Bechtel Summit, Al again attended the National Scout Jamboree, but this time as a member of the trading post. Chief Petty Officer Alvin Gay, a veteran of the Vietnam War, is retired from the U. S. Navy as Hospital Corpsman Chief.
Al lives in Cypress with his wife Laura. They have ten adult children: Tyler, Travis, Alise, Jeff, Trisha, Kristi, Elisha, and Gina, including two Eagle Scouts, Spencer and Matthew, and 13 grandchildren.
