Steven M. Kernes

2018

Steven is Advancement Chair for Portola District, serves on Orange County Council’s Advancement Committee, and has served as instructor for several council sponsored training events. Previously, he was Assistant Cubmaster of Pack 707, was Advancement Chair for five years and Assistant Scoutmaster for three years in Troop 801 and was Associate Advisor of Service and Activities for Modoc Chapter of the Order of the Arrow. Steven completed Advancement Training at Philmont Training Center in 2013 and Wood Badge training in 2018. He received the District Award of Merit in 2011 and Wiatava Lodge’s Wischixin award in 2015.

This past summer their two adult sons, Justin and Adam, supported by their parents backpacked the entire 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, in some cases bypassing wildfires raging in the area. Steven and Amy helped with the multiple food drops and visited them at a few places along the trail. Justin, but not Adam, had previously summited 14,505-foot Mt. Whitney during a Scout outing. Therefore, on their trek north, the two sons corrected this inequity by taking a nine-day side trip to the mountain’s summit. The trek took 129 days northbound, but a much quicker and less strenuous 2-1/2-hour flight southbound.

Steven lives in Brea with his wife Amy, a 2013 Silver Beaver Recipient. Their two sons, Justin and Adam, are both Eagle Scouts and obviously have extensive backpacking experience.
